A team of scientists, led by Dr. Dyoni M. Oliveira and Prof. Wout Boerjan at the VIB-UGent Center for Plant Systems Biology in Belgium, has demonstrated a way to finetune the structure of lignin in corn by applying CRISPR/Cas9 technology. Their work, in collaboration with KU Leuven (Belgium), the University of Antwerp (Belgium), and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA), was recently published in Trends in Biotechnology https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tibtech.2025.01.006.
This breakthrough can enhance corn’s potential as a dual-purpose crop — producing grains for food or feed and straw serving as a renewable source for plant-based chemicals. The technology allows for the production of lignin oil that is low in carboxylates and rich in guaiacyl-derived alcohols. The applications of this technology are not only restricted to corn but can also be applied to other bioenergy crops like sugarcane, sorghum and miscanthus.
